Tree Commission Minutes 11/30/2007
OLD LYME TREE COMMISSION
Minutes of a Special Meeting
November 30, 2007

Regular members present: Anne Bing; Adela Wilmerding; Pat Moll; Joanne DiCamillo
Alternate Member: Gerry Foster
Members absent: Regular member; Emily Griswold; Alternate member; Joan Flynn

The members met at 11:15 A.M. at the Tantummaheag town landing. The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the trees growing there.

The majority of the trees growing along the path and the river seemed to be relatively healthy although several of them had broken branches caused by an invasive vine growing on the trunks, probably bittersweet.  There was a discussion about removing three trees that are growing on the bank of the river, on the northwest side of the path.  Anne Bing noted that trees help to stabilize soil and removal could cause erosion during a storm surge.  Gerry Foster commented that tides do run very high during a storm.  Adela Wilmerding suggested that there could be a set back regulation regarding removal of trees and vegetation along the CT River and the CT River Gateway Commission should be contacted for more information.

A tree, located prominently at the top of the bank, on the southeast side, was evaluated.  It appeared to be a maple.  Pat Moll pointed out that a few of the trees on the neighbor’s lawn in the same vicinity were old and decayed and would eventually need to be removed.  After discussion, members agreed that the tree was healthy and removing it wouldn’t necessarily help to make access to the landing easier. There is already a sufficient amount of room to accommodate a vehicle preparing to launch a canoe or kayak.

All of the members agreed that the invasive vines growing on all of the trees should probably be removed to keep the trees in a healthy state.

Discussion will be continued at the regular monthly meeting on December 20. The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 A.M.
